Brainspotting Therapy

A Gentle, Brain-and-Body-Based Path to Healing

Brainspotting is a powerful, trauma-informed therapy that helps clients access and heal emotional wounds held deep in the brain and body. Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting works by identifying specific eye positions—called brainspots—that connect directly to unprocessed emotional and physiological experiences.

Rather than focusing only on thoughts or behaviors, Brainspotting supports the brain’s natural ability to process and release what has been stored beneath conscious awareness. This allows healing to occur at both emotional and nervous system levels.

At New Dawn Counseling, Brainspotting is integrated with other evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT, and IFS-informed parts work.

Who Brainspotting Is For

Brainspotting is especially helpful for people who:

  • Feel “stuck” despite insight or previous therapy

  • Experience strong emotional or physical reactions without clear explanation

  • Want a body-based, nervous-system-informed therapy approach

  • Prefer not to retell their trauma story in detail

  • Seek deeper, lasting emotional healing

Concerns Brainspotting Helps Treat

Brainspotting is effective for a wide range of emotional and mental health concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD (including complex and developmental trauma)

  • Anxiety and panic disorders

  • Depression and emotional numbness

  • Grief and loss

  • Attachment wounds and relationship trauma

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Performance anxiety (school, sports, work, public speaking)

  • Phobias and specific fears

  • Somatic symptoms and stress-related physical complaints

Brainspotting for Children

Children often express emotional pain through behavior and their bodies before they can put feelings into words. Brainspotting offers a gentle, nonverbal way for children to process emotional distress without needing to relive or describe traumatic events.

Especially helpful for:

  • Anxiety and school stress

  • Separation anxiety

  • Emotional outbursts or meltdowns

  • Trauma from medical procedures, accidents, or family disruption

  • Sleep difficulties and nightmares

  • Low self-esteem and emotional sensitivity

Therapeutic Goals for Children:

  • Increase emotional regulation and felt safety

  • Reduce anxiety and behavioral reactivity

  • Improve sleep, focus, and school functioning

  • Strengthen resilience and emotional expression

  • Support healthy nervous system development

Sessions are developmentally tailored and may include drawing, play, movement, and simple body awareness.

Brainspotting for Teens

Adolescence brings intense emotional and neurological changes. Brainspotting allows teens to process overwhelming experiences without requiring lengthy verbal explanations or emotional exposure beyond their comfort.

Especially helpful for:

  • Social anxiety and performance stress

  • Depression and mood swings

  • Trauma and bullying

  • Identity and self-esteem struggles

  • Panic attacks and emotional shutdown

  • Academic and athletic pressure

Therapeutic Goals for Teens:

  • Build emotional regulation and distress tolerance

  • Reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms

  • Improve confidence and self-awareness

  • Strengthen coping skills and nervous system balance

  • Support healthy identity development

Brainspotting for Adults

For adults, Brainspotting offers a way to address long-standing emotional patterns, trauma, and stress that may not shift through talk therapy alone. It helps resolve trauma stored in the nervous system and supports lasting emotional change.

Especially helpful for:

  • PTSD and complex trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Depression and emotional numbness

  • Relationship difficulties rooted in past trauma

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Grief and unresolved loss

  • Perfectionism and performance anxiety

Therapeutic Goals for Adults:

  • Resolve trauma stored in the nervous system

  • Reduce emotional reactivity and hypervigilance

  • Increase emotional resilience and self-trust

  • Improve relationships and sense of safety

  • Support long-term emotional and physical well-being

What to Expect in a Brainspotting Session

Sessions are calm, focused, and collaborative. You remain fully in control throughout the process.

Your therapist will:

  • Help identify a brainspot connected to your experience

  • Guide awareness of thoughts, emotions, and body sensations

  • Support your brain’s natural healing process

  • Integrate grounding and regulation throughout

You do not need to relive trauma or share graphic details for Brainspotting to be effective.

Clients often report:

  • Feeling lighter or more settled

  • Improved emotional clarity

  • Reduced symptom intensity

  • Greater sense of calm and control

Is Brainspotting Right for You?

Brainspotting may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck despite previous therapy

  • Want a trauma-informed, body-based approach

  • Experience anxiety, trauma, or emotional overwhelm

  • Prefer therapy that goes beyond talk alone

  • Are seeking deep, lasting healing
